The Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) is considered the traditional lead-up race to the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) five days later on November 6. 10 of this year’s 13 Wakeful Stakes runners are looking to back-up this year, with a win increasing their chances of making the final field.

Abduction ($3.60) and Fontein Ruby ($3.80) continue to contest favouritism in the Ladbrokes.com.au betting market.

The John O’Shea-trained Abduction has seen a big push from punters, with her price shortening from $4.40 to $3.60. The lightly-raced filly will make her debut in Group racing on Saturday, winning two of her five career starts.

Can the favourite justify her favouritism and win the 2014 Wakeful Stakes? Or will one of her 11 classy rivals steal the show on their way to the 2014 Crown Oaks? Check out our betting tips and selections for the race below.

#1 Fontein Ruby ($3.80)

You can’t go past Robert Smerdon’s filly in our opinion, despite punters shying away from her in favour of Abduction. She’s got the best form after winning the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) her last two times out and even though the filly has drawn wide in barrier 12, she proved she can still win from a wide start in the Caulfield Classic (barrier 13).

#5 Muscovado ($7.50)

This Gai Waterhouse-trained filly couldn’t be in better form and is available at a great price for punters looking to back a winner in the Wakeful Stakes. Muscovado has won three of her last four starts, including the City Tattersalls Club Inglis Bonus Handicap (1600m) last time out, and placed third in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m). Her only issue will be stepping up to the 2000m distance after sticking to the mile.

#6 Candelara ($9.50)

Bjorn Baker’s filly has finished in the top three in her five starts since May but has found it hard to win with just one from her nine career starts. She’ll get a great start from barrier two in the Wakeful with superstar international jockey Joao Moreira in the saddle. Candelara is offering punters the best value for money and can easily finish in the top three, setting her up for a good run in the TV Stakes.
