Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
15 three-year-olds will tackle the mile this Saturday in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, with betting tips set out below.
The 2014 Carbine Club Stakes is one of nine black type races running this weekend as part of the action-packed Victoria Derby Day.
Azkadellia is clear favourite in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, offering a price of $2.90.
The lightly-raced filly has yet to finish outside the top two but she’s only had three career starts. She’ll have the advantage of superstar international hoop Joao Moreira in her saddle but she’s yet to be tested over the mile. This will be her first step up to black type racing and with so many talented contenders on the field, she could easily get lost in the crowd.
Can the favourite justify her favouritism? Or are there too many things working against her? Check out our betting tips for the 2014 Carbine Club Stakes below.
Darren Weir’s colt is a great price for punters looking to back a winner in the Carbine Club Stakes considering his recent form. He’s won his last two starts, the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) and Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m), and has already proven successful over rivals Manhattan Avenue, Kapset, and Careless. He hasn’t placed outside the top three since March and is a good chance for Saturday. The only question mark hovering over Stratum Star is that he’s yet to run over the mile.
#14 Tahni Dancer ($12)
The Clinton McDonald-trained filly will get a good start to the race, set to jump from barrier three and is a well-priced double digit runner. Her spring campaign has been successful with one win, two seconds, and one third placing. She was just one length of third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) but couldn’t sprint the same as the winner her last time out in the Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m). Plenty of experience over the mile and black type racing. Could be a real contender and will get a good start from barrier three.
#8 Kapset ($26)
Greg Eurell’s gelding is offering punters the best value for money in the Carbine Club Stakes betting market at generous $26 odds to win or $6.70 to place. Kapset will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 12 but Michael Rodd should be able to bring the in-form gelding home in the money. The lightly-raced Kapset has finished top three in all four of his career starts including a minor placing in the Yellowglen Vintage Listed Stakes.
