Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Defending Mackinnon Stakes champion Side Glance will no longer get a chance to win back-to-back in the $1 million feature race after being scratched from the race on Thursday morning.
The UK galloper had been paid up for the race on Wednesday, drawing barrier seven for the race and partnering hoop Craig Williams. However, just 24 hours later he was withdrawn from contention after wrenching a fetlock.
Side Glance has now been robbed of his chance to join the likes of champion horses Phar Lap, Rising Fast, Peter Pan, Wakeful, and Tranquil Star who are all multiple winners of the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).
His trainer Andrew Balding notified Racing Victoria stewards this morning that the horse was lame in his box at the Werribee International Quarantine Centre and was subsequently removed from the race an hour later.
The seven-year-old gelding won last year’s Victoria Derby Day feature race in a convincing run that saw him run wide early and take the lead at the middle stages. He had a much harder lead-up to this year’s race with two Australian spring starts that were fabulous and saw him in-form to retain his Mackinnon crown.
He battled on bravely in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m), keeping a nice tempo to finish third before a fantastic run in last Saturday’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley that saw him right in the firing line early. He was under pressure around the bend but kept on going late to just miss out on a placing. It was a great effort and he finished in fourth place, just half a length off the winner Adelaide.
This led him to be a $9 shot to win the 2014 Mackinnon Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au before being scratched. Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) winner Foreteller has now firmed from $10 to $9.50 to fill his spot.
Open your online betting account with Ladbrokes.com.au and you could win $3 million this Saturday for just $3. All you have to do is correctly pick the winners of the eight featured races on VRC Derby Day (including the Mackinnon Stakes) and you’ll be $3 million richer.
