Moreira Booked for Signoff in Melbourne Cup

Confirmed to partner the classy stayer in Saturday’s Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Saturday, leading Hong Kong-based jockey Joao Moreira will retain the ride on Signoff in the 2014 Melbourne Cup next Tuesday.

Finishing a close second to Australian expat Zac Purton in the race to the Hong Kong jockeys premiership last year, Moreira more than displayed his skill in a successful hit-and-run mission earlier this month, highlighted by an impressive victory aboard He’s Your Man in the featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap.

Confirming veteran jockey Glen Boss had initially been booked to ride the Authorized gelding in the Lexus Stakes, trainer Darren Weir revealed he had hoped to secure the services of one jockey for both rides on Signoff over the coming week and was thrilled to have secured the services of one of the world’s best.

“I had Glen Boss booked for the (Lexus Stakes) ride but he has confirmed he will be riding Who Shot Thebarman in the Melbourne Cup and I wanted to have the same rider on in both races if he made the Cup field,” Weir told TVN.

“I don’t know much about the guy but he’s obviously very good and things happen for him, so when he was able to make the weights in both races it was a no-brainer really.

“I’m not saying he’s going to come out and just win on Saturday and charge into the Cup field, but I’m happy with the way things are going, put it that way.”

Securing a commendable race record of six wins and a further three minor places from his 12 competitive starts so far, Signoff was a standout performer over his maiden racing prep through the summer and autumn of 2013/14, highlighted by a five length victory in the Medownick Laser Clinic BM90 (2500m) on March 29th.

Beating just two runners home in a minor over 1400m first-up this time, Signoff has quickly built to the task in finishing third amongst classy competition in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) and continuing to progress to a close second in the Group 2 Herbert Power Quality (2400m) and third in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) last time out.

Yet to be confirmed for a start, Signoff is currently available at a generous quote of $17 for success in Melbourne Cup betting markets; featuring as sole occupant of the sixth line with leading online bookie
