Consistent Magicool Capable of Victoria Derby Success

Returning to racing in strong and competitive form through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival so far, trainer Mark Kavanagh is confident classy three-year-old Magicool is confident of success in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

Securing a credible total of two race wins and a further one minor places from his five competitive starts so far, Magicool is unlucky not to be carrying winning form into the Victoria Derby after being inconvenienced twice and squeezed out in the final straight of the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) last time out, but still managed a commendable fifth.

Allocated the seemingly awkward barrier 16 for the 2014 Victoria Derby, Kavanagh is confident the Fastnet Rock gelding will find ideal running positon from the wide draw and is confident of a typically competitive performance.

“He’s never run a bad race, even last start he didn’t have a lot of luck but before that he was pretty consistent,” Kavanagh said following Wednesday’s Victoria Derby barrier draw.

“Tactics is an interesting one for this race of course, but being drawn out there we aren’t going to get caught on the fence.

“I think he’s one of the best horses in the stable, he’s still 12 months away from being at the top end but I believe he’s really going to progress and mature into a really nice weight-for-age horse.”

Finishing fifth in the Aquanas Foods Handicap (1200m) on debut in June before immediately returning to the paddock for a brief spell, Magicool displayed an exceptional turn of foot to find the line close to two lengths in the clear of closest rival Fitna in the Height Insurance Agencies Maiden (1200m) first-up on September 11th.

Sprinting well late to finish second in a minor over 1435m on September 26th, the gelding out of Perfect Truth charged home to secure undoubtedly his most impressive win in date in the Listed U.C.I Stakes (1800m) on October 4th in what was his only other start prior to the Caulfield Classic.

Confirmed to be partnered by veteran jockey Glen Boss, Magicool is currently available at generous odds of $21 for success in Victoria Derby betting markets or $5.50 to figure in the places; arguably offering punters the best value for money with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
