Wakeful Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw Confirmed

A classy field of 13 fillies has been confirmed for Saturday’s Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington, highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Spring Racing Carnival’s standout three-year-olds.

Having undoubtedly found peak condition in the lead-up to Derby Day at Flemington, Fontein Ruby highlights the 2014 Wakeful Stakes final field, but will have to find an extra gear if to overcome the reasonably wide and awkward barrier 12.

Securing a commendable record of four wins and a further three minor places from her ten competitive appearances on course so far, Fontein Ruby finished a promising third in the Equino King Of Speed Handicap (900m) first-up on July 2nd before registering back-to-back victories in the Grand Hotel Frankston Handicap (1200m) and J Eskine & P Carroll 3.y.o (1410m).

Finishing a luckless fifth when blocked for a run in the final straight of the TMB Printing Handicap (1400m) on September 20th, the Turffontein filly completed a perfect transition to black type racing when comfortably winning the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) on October 4th; repeating the dose in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) last time out.

Interestingly figuring as the only other runner to carry winning form into the Wakeful Stakes, Muscovado has displayed a keen ability to perform from even the widest of draws and will need to employ that experience this weekend when leaving from gate 9.

Finishing fifth in the Carlton Draught Plate over 1100m first-up on July 29th, Muscovado announced her racing return when winning two minors over 1300m back-to-back in August and September before placing a credible third in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) on September 27th.

Having poked clear to claim the City Tatts Inglis Bonus (1600m) last time out, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident the Big Brown filly will have no issue in performing over 2000m for the first time competitively in the 2014 Wakeful Stakes.

Arguably the biggest winner of the Wakeful Stakes’ leading contenders at Wednesday’s barrier draw, Veuvelicious has been offered an excellent chance of returning to the winner’s circle from gate 5, and will be further boosted by jockey Corey Brown taking the ride.

Claiming two wins and as many minor places from her ten competitive starts so far, Veuvelicious performed particularly well over her maiden campaign through the Autumn Carnival; winning the Sensational Springvale Plate (1500m) on March 22nd before placing third behind the likes of Bachman and Group 1 placegetter Scratch Me Lucky in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) on April 5th.

Winning the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) and returning to the paddock after placing a promising sixth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), the daughter of Northern Meteor is yet to find peak condition over four starts this time in, and will be looking to improve on a frustrating run for sixth in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) last time out on October 18th.

Also offered a difficult start when allocated barrier 11, Golconda has lined up at Flemington on just one occasion prior to the Wakeful Stakes; a credible run for fourth in the Group 3 7 News Stakes (1000m) on debut last November.

Displaying a keen turn of foot to run on from the rear of the field and finish fifth in the Ethereal Stakes last time out, the Snitzel filly will be partnered by jockey Vlad Duric in the 2014 Wakeful Stakes.
