Wandjina Headlines 2014 Carbine Club Stakes Nominations

Gai Waterhouse’s Wandjina will back-up his 2014 Cox Plate run just one week later with a start in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m), making him the highest rated nominee.

18 three-year-olds were nominated for the 2014 Carbine Club Stakes on Monday, one of the supporting races on the action-packed Victoria Derby Day this Saturday at Flemington, which will feature nine black type races.

Wandjina may have finished 10th in the Cox Plate, but the colt was a fast-finishing 3½ lengths off winner Adelaide. His last two starts have been at the highest level of racing, which makes him a leading class competitor in the Carbine Club Stakes.

Waterhouse could be dually represented in the race after also nominating Duccio, the Listed Dulcify Stakes (1600m) runner-up.

Our Vespa hasn’t been seen on the track since September 28, in which the colt could only manage sixth in the Group 3 Guineas Prelude (1400m), nearly seven lengths off winner Rich Enuff.

The colt has already found success in New Zealand, earning three consecutive victories including in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) back in March, but his debut race in Australia left much to be desired. However, he’s set to return this Saturday after a month long break to atone for his last outing.

Clinton McDonald’s Tahni Dancer is set to race for the second consecutive Saturday after coming second in the Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m) at Moonee Valley. The filly ran well but couldn’t keep up with Lumosty, who finished 2½ lengths clear of Tahni Dancer.

Peter Moody has nominated Easy Drama and Hi World, who will be making just his third career start, the first at black type racing.

The Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star is in-form following two consecutive wins in the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) and Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) this month. The colt has placed outside the top three in just two of his nine career starts.
