Talented three-year-old Moonovermanhattan has returned to the winner’s circle for this first time this time in at Moonee Valley this afternoon, displaying an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to take out the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m).
Jumping from the gates well, the Manhattan Rain colt settled in prime position on the heels of early leader Zululand, who set a noticeably quick tempo passing the post the first time and leading onto the back straight.
Receiving an ideal run round the final bend and onto the final straight, Moonovermanhattan quickly took up the pace and charged clear of his rivals; finding the line around three lengths in the clear of Atmosphere; a fast-finishing Go Indy Go steaming home for a close third.
Jockey Craig Newitt delivered an exceptional ride on Moonovermanhattan for victory in the 2014 Moonee Valley Vase and was quick to lay the praise on trainer Mick Price.
“He’s stuck by me through thick and thin and he’s got a lot of jockeys there riding work … this time of year it’s always great riding for him,” Newitt said of Price.
“He’s a big, strong colt who the further he goes, the better he’ll be.
“He’s very relaxed; sat outside the leader today and his best attribute is he has a good little turn of foot, so onwards and upwards to the Derby.”
Price was pleased with Moonovermanhattan’s performance for victory in the Moonee Valley Vase and confirmed the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) on November 1st will figure as the next point of all should the three-year-old pull up well from this afternoon’s run.
“He’s a good looking horse, he stands over a bit of ground and he’s a big clean-winded colt,” Price said following the Moonee Valley Vase.
“He’s got a lovely temperament on him, he’s very sound, he’s had a good two weeks and I think this is the race that’s usually a good form race for the VRC Derby, I know they’ve got the Caulfield Classic there now but just really looking forward to it.
“You put him in a VRC Derby with cover he would get behind a horse and go to sleep, so he has a hell of a lot of things going for him he just has to get the 2500m.
“We’ve had a few runners in the VRC Derby – I think we’ve run second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth so there’s one spot to go.”
Debuting with a victory in the Group 3 Darley National Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in May before immediately returning to the spelling paddock, Moonovermanhattan beat just one runner home in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) first-up this time before finishing fourth in the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m), second in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) and a credible seventh in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in the lead-up to the Moonee Valley Vase.
