Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Flemington horseman Nigel Blackiston will put a nomination in for the 2014 Myer Classic Saturday week with his smart mare Suavito after she saluted for the punters in the last on Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley.
The Thorn Park four-year-old was one of 12 mares fighting it out in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) and sat top of the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.60.
Ridden back off the pace today, champion jockey Damien Oliver gave the promising spring hope a patient 10 out of 10 ride before she swooped late and swamped the front runners to win running away.
“She was due for a change of luck,” Oliver said post-win.
It was the fellow Blackiston-trained pacesetter You’re So Good ($21) and the Gwenda Johnston-trained Precious Gem ($13), with Craig Williams in the saddle, fighting it out on the straight.
You’re So Good worked hard on the outside to hit the front early on and wasn’t giving away her lead easily in the end, coming again and again on the inside with Precious Gem looking like testing the metal for sure before the favourite came late.
Oliver took Suavito away from the rails to work clear approaching the home turn before she easily strode past the eventual placegetters for a strong win so the punters could end the day on a high.
“She’s a tough mare and a great way to finish the day,” Oliver added.
“I was hopeful to hold a little bit holder place but the pace was really strong so I just wanted to have her comfy.
“She was just too strong for them in the end.”
Luckless in her past few starts Suavito, who likely doubled her value with a black-type win on Cox Plate Day, came off a third when disappointed for a run behind Star Fashion in the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) at Caulfield 10 days earlier.
She could now be tested in Group 1 company for the third time with Blackiston eyeing the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1200m) next weekend at her home Flemington track on Victoria Derby Day.
“She was very unlucky her last few starts she’s a tough little filly but she dust keeps trying,” the winning horseman said.
“We’ve tried her over more distance and she’ll get the mile.
“We’ll put a nomination in for the Myers (Myer Classic) and see what happens.
“She loves it here. It was a good run and it’s fantastic to see her win.”
Her other two Group 1 runs produced a seventh behind this spring’s beaten Caulfield Cup favourite Lucia Valentina in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and a sixth to Rising Romance in the Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick.
