Cox Plate Day 2014 – Moonee Valley Best Bets

Melbourne’s Moonee Valley Racecourse is ready to play host to the latest Group 1 meeting of the spring racing carnival for 2014 Cox Plate Day, best bets across the nine-race program from the team detailed below.

Sacred Falls

Moonee Valley racing kicks off today at 1:15pm (AEDT) with the juveniles facing off in the lucrative $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m) only two of which have had a previous start with the Liam Birchley-trained duo of Hot Snipperty and Syn City.

The first of the seven Group status races though doesn’t run until Race 3 at 2:25pm where the Robert Smerdon-trained 2014 Crown Oaks entry Lumosty is odds-on favourite in the $200,000 Group 2 Drummond Golf Fillies Classic (1600m) to atone for her last start eighth in the Thousand Guineas.

Of course the race everyone is gearing up for is the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), Australasia’s weight-for-age championship stealing the show as Race 8 at 5:40pm.

There are still the full 14 final acceptors in the Cox Plate field for this afternoon including the in-form Robert Hickmott-trained favourite Fawkner ($4.60) coming off a Caulfield Stakes win, Irish visitor Adelaide ($7) out wide in barrier 13, the David Payne-trained Caulfield Stakes runner-up Criterion ($7) and Chris Waller’s triple Group 1 winner in Sydney Sacred Falls ($7.50).

Other Group race highlights on the Cox Plate Day card including the $250,000 Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) at 3:35pm (Race 5) for 2014 Melbourne Cup hopes, and the curtain opener to the Cox Plate, the $200,000 Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) at 4:50pm (Race 7) for Victoria Derby-bound hopes including Atmosphere.

To make sure you have plenty left in the account for the rest of the spring at close of business today here are our Best Bets for Cox Plate Day!

In The Big One (Race 8) – 2014 Cox Plate

  • #1 Sacred Falls ($7.50)

Is on the drift out from an opening quote of $6 but think this smart miler can extend his brilliance out over the 2000m for the first time and hand Waller with his maiden Cox Plate trophy. The five-year-old is a triple Group 1 winner over 1600m in Sydney, including the George Main Stakes two back, and while the George Main – Cox Plate double is a rare one this could be the year for an upset. He’s tracking as good as the autumn when runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth over this distance and was far from disgraced when fourth to the favourite Fawkner in the Caulfield Stakes leading up to this with improvement to come with Zac Purton on from barrier nine.

Better Than Bank Interest (Race 3) – 2014 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic

Smerdon’s beaten Thousand Guineas favourite opened at $1.85 and has firmed further into $1.75 making her the clear pick in the Fillies Classic. It’s a short price but her class suggests it’s a deserving price as she’s out to win back the love of the punters after her Group 1 loss last start. She suffered interference last time out in her first look at a mile and was right at the back with too much work to do. She’ll be fitter for the run, has seen the distance now, gun barrier two draw and this is an easier assignment.

Best Upset To Win (Race 7) – 2014 Moonee Valley Vase

So $4.60 isn’t exactly upset odds but there are two shorter than this filly in the markets with the Victoria Derby-bound Atmosphere ($4) and the rails-drawn Chivalry ($4.20) also in the equation. Go Indy Go takes on the boys here on the back of a seventh in the Thousand Guineas which was better than it looked on paper. She finished one better than Lumosty who is odds-on favourite for the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic today so think the bookies understand what happened in that race. This Adelaide-trained daughter of Bernardini won a Sydney Group 1 against the colts and geldings over a mile in April and think she can hold her own again here.
