2014 Kingston Town Classic Nominations Feature Top Spring Runners

Nominations for some of the premier Perth Summer Racing Carnival races were taken on Monday, including the 2014 Kingston Town Classic.

The Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), held on Saturday December 6th at Ascot Racecourse, is the second Group One feature of the festival, run under weight-for-age conditions, and worth $500,000 in prize money. Because of this, it attracts a quality field of local and interstate middle-distance gallopers.

This year’s nominations feature 88 strong runners, including many who have wowed in both Sydney and Melbourne during the spring racing season.

Chris Waller’s Foreteller has enjoyed a third placing in the Group 2 Dat Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and a win in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m), over the same distance as the Kingston Town Classic, so far this spring with his season set to end this weekend in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

The gelding has also been nominated for the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) two weeks prior. It is worth noting six of the last eight winners of the Kingston Town Classic have come through the Railway Stakes, so many of the leading contenders will be seen on both lists.

The top Sydney trainer has also nominated Moriarty for the middle-distance race, winner of the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) earlier this month.

Other nominations who have been prominent on the spring racing scene include Gai Waterhouse’s Liberty’s Choice, Naturalism Stakes winner Gris Caro, the Wez Hunter-trained Smokin’ Joey, JRA Plate winner Spillway, British import Stipulate, and Zululand.

Kingston Town Classic defending champion Ihtsahymn also features among the nominations.

The four-year-old gelding won last year’s race a shoulder ahead of Luckygray and is set to return to claim two wins in a row following a successful autumn racing campaign that included a win in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) and a second placing in the Group 2 W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) in April.

Ihtsahymn is a proven successful mile runner that also has what it takes to stay over longer distances. What he is not is a sprinter.

The Fred Kersley-trained horse was last seen in the Listed Birthday Stakes (1200m) on October 4, in which he finished dead last. This was added to a midfield finish last October in the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m).

Along with the interstate hotshots who have been getting a name for themselves this spring there are plenty of highly-rated local Perth horses among the 2014 Kingston Town Classic nominations.

Grant William’s Amorino has won four of his last five starts, and was a fast-finishing second in the fifth, including back-to-back wins in the Listed Bunbury Stakes (1400m) and Listed Grandstand Cup (1500m).

Bunbury Cup winner Classique Ivory, Alan Mathew’s Cyber Crime, Coolgardie Cup winner Express Service, Perth Cup runner-up God Has Spoken, and Boulder Cup winner Red Blast have all declared for the race.

The Adam Durrant-trained Chester Road was a surprise name featured on the nomination list, considering he hasn’t been seen on a course since coming runner-up in the Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m) back in December 2012. Should the gelding make the final field, it’ll be just under two years since he last raced.
