Nine classy horses will take the field this Saturday in the 2014 Crystal Mile, offering punters some excellent betting options and chance to back a winner.
The Group 2 Schweppes Crystal Mile (1600m) is one of six supporting black types races on Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley, running as Race 6 at 4:10pm (AEDT).
Five of the runners are available at single figure odds with online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Trust In A Gust at $2.40.
The four-year-old horse is the best runner on the field after his top competition – He’s Your Man and Lucky Hussler – failed to declare for the race’s final field.
Trust In A Gust is a fantastic runner, having finished top three in 15 of his 17 career starts which includes 10 wins.
He stepped up to black type racing for the first time last month in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Charity Cup (1400m), which he won from favourite Dissident after taking the lead with 300m to go. The horse followed it up with another tough win in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
Trust In A Gust has had 10 starts since January this year, six of which he’s won and three in which he’s finished runner-up.
He’s a brilliant runner who is in incredible form ahead of the Crystal Mile this Saturday.
However he will have to keep off four other runners who the bookies believe are good enough to warrant single figure odds.
- #1 Speediness ($5) – Trust In A Gust’s biggest rival based on recent form. Finished just ¾ of a length off him in the Toorak last time out. Will benefit from a similar draw in barrier 4 which means the gelding should have a good run.
- #3 Akavoroun ($7) – just missed out on a placing in the Toorak but ran such a great race despite lack of luck. He really hit the line well in the Rupert Clarke too, despite finishing seventh. Has displayed good runs, just needs his placing to show it.
- #6 Hooked ($8) – will get the ideal inside run after drawing barrier one with Craig Williams to ride. In-form following Group 3 Cameron Stakes (1500m) win and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) minor placing. Only single figure runner to not come from Rupert Clarke/Toorak.
- #7 Bull Point ($8) – Chris Waller’s horse is also a $8 fixed-price odd after drawing a start from barrier two. Took minor placings from first three spring starts, including second in the Group 1 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m), before a fast-finishing sixth in the Toorak.
So can one of these four runners upstage Trust In A Gust for the Crystal Mile win? Or is Darren Weir-trained horse too strong to beat?
