Headline Entries Missing From 2014 Geelong Cup Final Field

13 horses will run in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on Wednesday, after the final field and barrier draw was released on Monday morning.

The final field looks different than many had expected, with the top five horses in the weights all being removed from the $300,000 race over the weekend.

Lloyd Williams’s pair Green Moon and Sea Moon, top weight and second top weight at 61kg and 59.5kg respectively, will not back up after running in the Caulfield Cup 2014 on Saturday.

Neither will the Peter Moody-trained duo Brambles and Lidari, who came fourth and sixth in the $3 million race at Caulfield, or Araldo.

The Trent Busuttin-trained Sangster will head to the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) this Saturday, leaving local favourite Sertorius with the top weight of 58kg.

The Jamie Edwards & Bruce Elkington-trained gelding will carry up to four kilos more than his 12 rivals, and has once again drawn wide in barrier 11.

Jockey Ryan Maloney will partner Sertorius for the first time this spring, following a disappointing campaign with Craig Williams that saw the seven-year-old finish midfield in his three Group One starts – the Memsie Stakes (1400m), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), and Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Edwards is confident Sertorius will appreciate the longer distance of the 2014 Geelong Cup.

“He’s all guns blazing going to Geelong on Wednesday then on to the Melbourne Cup,” Edwards told TVN.

VRC and ATC Oaks runner-up Zanbagh will have a real chance at winning on Wednesday after drawing a run from midfield. The mare will carry just 54kg in the race, three kilos less than her last three starts.

Zanbagh hit the line well her last time out in the Benalla Cup (2046m) in which she finished third and will appreciate the step up to 2400m distance.

“I think she’s coming good at the right time,” Payne said to TVN.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Marksmanship will get the ideal inside run with champion jockey Kerrin McEvoy after drawing barrier one. The seven-year-old horse is in-from following a runner-up finish in the Group 3 Bart Cummings (2520m) last time out, so is a proven winner at the distance.

Like A Carousel is the only last-start winner on the field following the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m), which the gelding won comfortably by 1.5 lengths. The Ken Keys-trained five-year-old will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 12 with Craig Newitt in the saddle.

Peter Moody will still be represented in the race by Wish Come True, who will enjoy a start from barrier four with Chad Schofield to ride.

The gelding was third in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) on September 18 but failed last time out in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m), finishing 13th to Junoob.

Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) runner-up More Than Sacred will have to overcome a start from the widest gate with Glen Boss in the saddle for Robert Smerdon.
