2014 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Nominations Extended

Nominations for the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) were taken on Monday morning, with just nine fillies declaring for the race. This is on par with last year’s race, which took just ten nominations.

This is shy of the maximum field limit of 15 plus four emergencies, so nominations have been extended for the race until 10:00am Tuesday.

The 2014 Fillies Classic will run on Cox Plate Day, this Saturday October 25. The field may be small, but there are some serious contenders featured.

The Clinton McDonald-trained Tahni Dancer headlines the nominations following an impressive spring campaign.

The three-year-old filly began with a minor placing and win over 1200m at both Moonee Valley and Cranbourne Racecourses before stepping up in class for the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) in which she finished runner-up to Eloping.

Tahni Dancer got her first start at the top level of racing a fortnight ago in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), in which she was a fast-finishing fifth.

She will now head to the Fillies Classic over the same distance on a track she is successful on.

Another leading nomination is Lumosty, who was favourite for the Thousand Guineas following a brilliant nine length maiden victory at Sale Racecourse. The Robert Smerdon-trained filly could only manage an eighth place finish in the Guineas, but will be a contender this Saturday at Moonee Valley.

Trainer Luke Oliver is dually represented in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic by Hautvillers, who will have just her third career start, and Kansas Sunflower, who has yet to win from three minor starts.

Robbie Griffith’s Singularity is the most experienced filly on the field with 10 career starts but the serial placer is still searching for her first win following three second and two third placings.
