2014 Moonee Valley Cup Nominations Released

Nominations for the 2014 Moonee Valley Cup were released Monday, with 23 stayers declaring for the race this Saturday, October 25.

Precedence will once again take on the Moonee Valley Cup, which he has won twice since 2010.

Four Lloyd Williams-owned horses have been included in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) nominations, though it is unlikely all four will take their place in the final field come Wednesday.

Green Moon and Sea Moon both ran in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) last Saturday, failing to place. They’ve already been pulled from the mid-week Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and may not back-up for the Moonee Valley Cup come this Saturday.

However both need help in increasing their place on the 2014 Melbourne Cup ballot, and the Moonee Valley Cup may just be their last chances to make the field for the race that stops the nation.

The newly imported Amralah is looking for her first Australian start following back-to-back wins in the Listed Doom Bar Stakes (2000m) and Group 3 Lancaster Stakes (2100m) at the end of summer racing in England. However she was also removed from the Geelong Cup, which means Saturday may be off the cards too.

The fourth Williams-owned horse nominated for the Moonee Valley Cup is Massiyn, who came 10th last time out in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Veteran stayer Precedence returns to the 2014 Moonee Valley Cup field once again, as he looks for his third win the Group 2 race.

The nine-year-old debuted in the race with a win in 2010 before missing out on a placing to Vatuvei in 2012. He returned to winning form in last year’s race and will likely take the field for a fourth time.

The Zabeel gelding had a successful winter season that concluded with a Group 3 Premiere’s Cup (2200m) second placing however he hasn’t found success in any of his three starts since. His best run was a Group 3 JRA Cup fifth (2040m) last time out but hasn’t been seen since September 26.

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller will make the journey to Melbourne with six-year-old Opinion, who was runner-up in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) last time out.

The Michael Kent-trained Epingle will search for her first spring win after just missing out on placings in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) and Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m).

Like A Carousel, Marksmanship, Ominous, Wish Come True, and Zanbagh have all already accepted for the Geelong Cup, so are unlikely to back-up three days later but only time will tell.
