The countdown is on until a star-studded field of local and international hopes faces off in the Caulfield Cup 2014 this afternoon, late mail tips from the Races.com.au experts found below.
Betting markets on this year’s $3 million Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) have been steadily led by the Kris Lees-trained mare Lucia Valentina who is out to $4.60 making her the shortest-priced four-year-mare since Leilani ($3.25 or 9/4) who won in 1974.
Following Lucia Valentina in the Caulfield Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are then the likes of the Chris Waller-trained Junoob ($9) coming off a Sydney Group 1 The Metropolitan win over the distance, and the Peter Moody-trained duo of Lidari ($9) and Brambles ($9.50) who ran second and third respectively behind Lucia Valentina last start in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).
So what’s the late mail Caulfield Cup tip to get behind at Ladbrokes.com.au?
#9 Junoob ($9)
One of four in the race for Waller who chases his maiden win the race, this Haafhd seven-year-old is one of the market movers having been backed in from $11. He’s proven over the distance (2400m) with three wins, a second and third from six starts over the mile and a half including the Group 1 in Sydney last time out. Has had one previous run at Caulfield finishing second so track shouldn’t prove a problem either. Carried a hefty 58kg to victory in The Metropolitan and so will appreciate the drop back to 55.5kg today. Drew barrier 15 but now starts from 12. Hong Kong-based hoop Douglas Whtye comes on in a boost.
#7 Seismos ($21)
The last remaining chance for UK trainer Marco Botti who ran second with Dandino, scratched with a leg problem this year, to win. Seismos has the rails run today with Craig Newitt riding on 56kg, three kilos less than the Dalakhani seven-year-old had on his back at Newbury back home when winning the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2700m) in mid-August. Could be wanting a bit further so looks good for the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November over the two miles (3200m) but still first-up here the distance won’t hurt and he’s a Group 1 winner (Gorsser Preis Von Baden) over the 2400m. Runs well fresh (5-2-1-0), working well in lead-up gallopers during quarantine, and if can wind up in time at Caulfield could surprise at nice odds.
