Glen Boss, who is set to ride Magicool in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) this Saturday, believes the gelding has what it takes to win the race.
The new-look 2014 Caulfield Classic will carry an impressive $750,000 worth of prize-money as it aims for an upgrade in class.
“No horse in the barn (Mark Kavanagh’s Flemington stable) is going as well as this bloke,” Boss told Racing Network on Friday.
“This is a nice horse taking the right steps.”
Sired by the great Fastnet Rock, Magicool is in-form following two spring campaign wins and one runner-up finish.
He impressively won the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) his last time out. The gelding sat in the few first and was in a great position around the turn. He didn’t produce a turn of foot but managed to keep his rivals off for a tough win.
The Caulfield Classic, formerly known as the Norman Robinson Stakes, has become renowned as the perfect lead-up race to the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) with the recommended two week break between the two.
The UCI Stakes has also been a good guide to the Derby in the past, which puts Magicool in a great spot if he can win the Caulfield Classis this Saturday.
“He’s a real stayer this bloke and he’s done everything right since winning last start,” Boss said.
“In fact, he’s gone on which you have to do if you’re going to be a chance of winning the Derby.”
Magicool is currently available at $6.50 in the Ladbrokes.com.au fixed-price odds, which are currently led by Kumaon ($3.90).
