13 mares are set to battle it out for victory in The Nivison 2014 this Saturday after the scratching of Rare Fragrance for Bryce Heys, offering punters a variety of top betting options and the chance to back a winner.
The Group 3 City Tattersalls Club Nivison (1200m) will run at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday, offering Sydney race fans an alternative to Caulfield Cup Day.
There are five single figure hopefuls in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Avoid Lightning at $3.10.
The Les Bridge-trained mare will jump from the middle of the field with champion jockey Tim Clark to ride.
The six-year-old has had a fantastic year, so it is no surprise she leads the Nivison odds. She has placed in all five of her last starts, including three wins, and won her two barrier trials including over the course proper on October 3rd.
Avoid Lightning had a great winter campaign, winning back-to-back races including the Listed June Stakes (1100m). She then made the step up in class at the end of the season for the Group 1 Tattersalls Tiara (1400m) in which she was a very fast-finishing third.
The mare has yet to start during spring, except for a winning barrier trial a fortnight ago. With Tim Clark in the saddle for a fourth consecutive time, this will be the mare to beat.
However, she faces some tough competition in the betting with four other runners offering single figure odds.
- #7 I’ve Got The Looks ($5.50) – market mover in the fixed-odds market after shortening from $6. Money has been coming in for the mare who will get a great start after drawing barrier two. Missed out on a placing with a fifth finish her last time out in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) but was a very fast-finisher, only two lengths off winner Famous Seamus.
- #4 My Sabeel ($7) – will start from the widest barrier following scratching of Rare Fragrance, but is still one of the favourites to win the Nivison following a third in the Group 3 Golden Pendent (1400m) from the wide 10th gate.
- #11 Brook Road ($8.50) – in-form following a runner-up minor finish in September and a successful barrier trial, will jump from barrier five.
- #2 Bound For Earth ($9.50) – has seen her price shorten from $11 to just make the cut for single figure hopefuls despite not winning a race all year. Her best result was runner-up in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) back in March.
So will one of these favourites bring it home? Or will The Nivison 2014 see an upset from one of the runners offering lucrative double digit odds?
