A handful of horses accepted to face off in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup field have also now been nominated to possibly back-up in next Wednesday’s Geelong Cup 2014.
Racing Victoria today took 30 nominations for the $300,000 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) running at Geelong Racecourse on October 22.
Five of those early Geelong Cup entries meanwhile are facing off in the first Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival major, the $3 million Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) this weekend.
The Caulfield Cup horses nominated for the Geelong Cup are: Lidari, Green Moon, Sea Moon, and the first two emergencies Brambles and Araldo who run on Saturday following the scratchings of Gris Caro and Dandino.
The Peter Moody-trained duo of Lidari and Brambles are a top chance in both races and pay $12 and $13 respectively in the latest Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to upset the favourite and their last start conqueror Lucia Valentina ($4.60).
She beat the two home at Flemington on October 4 when the trio ran the trifecta in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m), the race that produced last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner (3rd).
Moody won the Geelong Cup last year with Ibicenco and so shoots for successive wins in the Melbourne Cup lead-up race.
The next best in Caulfield Cup betting of the Geelong Cup hopes is then Robert Hickmott’s 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon ($31).
He is followed by second emergency Araldo ($41) getting in for Michael Moroney after connections of last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Dandino had to pull the pin on the veteran international’s bid this year due to lameness in his off front leg.
Hickmott’s second chance of going back-to-back in the Caulfield Cup, Sea Moon ($61) then rounds out the contingent.
Along with Green Moon and Sea Moon Hickmott and owner Lloyd Williams have also nominated for: Amralah, Hartani, Massiyn, Shikarpour and Thought Worthy making Macedon Lodge the easily best represented in the Geelong Cup nominations.
While last year’s Geelong Cup winner Ibicenco could only manage to run 16th behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente in last year’s $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November, the race has produced a number of genuine hopes in the ‘race that stops a nation’ over the years.
Back in 2011 French raider Dunaden completed the Geelong Cup – Melbourne Cup double repeating the feat achieved by fellow French visitor Americain 12 months earlier.
Bauer also won the 2008 Geelong Cup before his narrow loss to Viewed in the Melbourne Cup and Dermot Weld’s European raider Media Puzzle completed the double in 2002.
While there are no international Geelong Cup hopefuls this year there are plenty of other talented chances.
Some of the other highly rated entries include Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup winning mare Epingle, the Robert Smerdon-trained Cranbourne Cup runner-up More Than Sacred, Mr O’Ceirin, former Victoria Derby winner Sangster and Sydney Cup third placegetter Sertorius.
See below for the full Geelong Cup 2014 nominations, the final field due for release on Monday.
