In Melbourne this Saturday a bumper 10-race program will light-up Caulfield Racecourse for Caulfield Cup Day including the Caulfield Sprint 2014 – betting tips for which are detailed below.

There were originally 13 hopefuls accepted for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint (1100m) but the early scratching of #9 Karacatis has left a dozen in the mix for Caulfield Race 8.

Leading the Caulfield Sprint betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Robert Smerdon-trained Shamal Wind at $4.80 in from $5.50.

The Dubai mare has been in to form this season and comes off two Group 3 thirds at the track, most recently in last Saturday’s Sprint Series Final behind Griante.

It’s a wide open affair then with six other single figure hopes in the markets including the returning Gai Waterhouse-trained Group 1 winner Driefontein ($6) in the outside barrier with 57.5kg to overcome and Unpretentious ($7.50) down in class off a Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes fifth last time out.

#4 Miracles Of Life ($8)

Former Group 1 winning two-year-old was sold earlier this year on the back of a failed The Goodwood run in Adelaide, before which she was a Group 2 winner at the same Morphettville track, and returns to racing here for new connections and trainers Peter & Paul Snowden. Is a classy type that can be forgiven from one bad run, goes well fresh and has a good record at the track (4-2-0-0) as well as over the short distance (3-1-2-0). Should get a gun run from barrier four with Hugh Bowman aboard and Team Snowden now how to train her type.

#5 Big Money ($8.50)

Drawn in gate six for Michael Rodd to ride, the Rodney Northam-trained Choisir gelding is first-up here on the back a spell having won four of his previous five starts before the break including back-to-back black-types. Group 3 winner in Brisbane, Listed winner at Grafton both over 1200m but also has a good record over this shorter distance (2-1-1-0). Loves racing first-up (3-2-1-0) and is out to continue that fine record at Caulfield for the first time. Speed will suit and will be charging home with 55.5kg.

#7 Shamal Wind ($4.80)

Firming favourite in gate eight with Nicholas Hall, who won the big one on this day 12 months ago with Fawkner in the Caulfield Cup, riding. She’s been in flying form and shouldn’t be far off again. Two Group 3 thirds at this track against her own kind, faces the boys here with 55kg dropping a kilo from those two runs. Previous winner at the track and distance (4-1-1-0) but might find it a bit sharp.
