Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Racing fans in Perth will enjoy some black type racing this weekend, as the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m) will run at Ascot Racecourse.
The final field & barrier draw was released Wednesday, with 15 three-year-olds declaring for the race, half the maximum field size of 30.
Headlining the field is the Adam Durrant-trained Ranger, who will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 13 with Peter Hall in the saddle.
The eight-year-old gelding hasn’t been since in spring racing yet but enjoyed success during winter with back-to-back Group Three runner-up finishes from the Hyperion Stakes (1600m) and Strickland Stakes (2000m).
God Has Spoken, the Neville Parnham-trained horse, will run with the top weight of 58kg, which is up to four kilos more than his rivals on the field. Jockey Brad Parnham will ride the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) runner-up home from barrier nine, but will he prove successful over the shorter distance?
The Grant Williams-trained Respondent will enjoy the inside run with William Pike after drawing barrier one. This can only mean good things for the in-form gelding, who has won three of his last four stars and placed third in the other.
The four-year-old enjoyed plenty of success during autumn racing, winning back-to-back in the Listed Lex Piper Stakes (1600m) and Schweppes J.C. Roberts Stakes (1800m). He then proved he could succeed as a stayer when he stepped up in class for the Group 2 W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) in April, which he won by 1¼ lengths.
Listed Birthday Stakes (1200m) second and third will both run in the 2014 Northerly Stakes. Fuchsia Bandana (2nd) will jump from barrier six while Ron’s Call (3rd) drew barrier 12.
Sharron Miller’s Stagnite is the most in-form runner on the field following four spring campaign starts, two of which were wins while the other two were placings.
The four-year-old gelding will enjoy an easy start with Jason Brown in the saddle after drawing barrier two.
Coolgardie Cup (1760m) winner Express Service will line-up for trainer Darren Mcauliffe while Group 3 W.A. Oaks (2400m) winner Balmont Girl will step down in distance for Paula Wagg.
