A field of 16 mares plus two emergencies will travel to Caulfield Racecourse on Wednesday for the 2014 Ladies Day Vase, offering punters a variety of betting options and chances to back a winner.
There are just three single figure hopefuls for the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m), with Suavito leading the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.80.
The Nigel Blackiston-trained mare will enjoy a start from barrier five with champion jockey Damien Oliver to ride.
Suavito was the favourite her last time out in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m), however the mare wasn’t even seen on the field after refusing to leave the stalls.
This hasn’t discouraged punters, as she remains the betting favourite for tomorrow’s 2014 Ladies Day Vase following two minor wins earlier in the spring.
There are just two other single figure betting prospects for the Vase: Forever Loved and Spirit Of Heaven, both at $6.
Gai Waterhouse’s Forever Loved will start wide after drawing barrier 10 but punters are confident the mare can bring it home following her Blazer Stakes win.
Jockey Vlad Duric will partner Forever Loved once more, following their 1.25 length victory at Flemington Racecourse on October 4, coming back strong from a last-place finish in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) last month.
Bookmakers aren’t making the mistake of underestimating the mare again, after she won the Blazer at odds of $13.
Peter Moody’s Spirit Of Heaven saw lots of money come in for her at Ladbrokes.com.au after shortening from $6 to $2.25. However the money slowed and she lengthened back to $6 this morning.
Punters were excited by the mare’s barrier three draw with Ben Melham to ride, especially considering she was a three-time consecutive winner in winter.
With just three entries offering single figure odds, this leaves the race open to a runner with lucrative double digit odds causing an upset much like Forever Loved did in the 2014 Blazer Stakes.
Peter Moody is dually represented by Dig A Pony ($15) who has drawn barrier seven with Luke Nolen to ride. The Rivette Series Final (1600m) winner was a fast-finishing fifth her last time out in the Blazer Stakes.
The Danny O’Brien-trained Keep De Rose ($15) will enjoy the inside run and just missed out on a placing her last time out by a shoulder while Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) fourth Bonaria ($4) will jump from barrier four with Michael Rodd to ride.
