Caulfield Cup 2014 Barrier Draw

The Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) barriers were drawn on Wednesday afternoon at 5:45pm (AEDT) for the 18 final field runners plus four emergencies.

The 2014 Caulfield Cup is set to be full of international talent with just two of the runners having their first start in Australia.

Gates two to five have won 10 of the past 30 Cups with barrier nine drawing the most winners (5). That is promising for Chris Waller’s Hawkspur this year, after drawing the middle barrier.

Hawkspur, one of only two runners who started their careers in Australia, will partner Damien Oliver as he tries to turn around his hit-and-miss spring campaign. The gelding has had five starts since August, only winning one, the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), and failing to place in any others. He’ll also enjoy riding with the lowest weight all spring, down to 55.5kg.

It is interesting to note that since 1983 no Caulfield Cup winner has won from barrier one, which is often the most desirable gate. The Marco Botti-trained Seismos will try and break that maiden this year as he enjoys the inside run with Craig Newitt to ride.

However this isn’t deterring punters, as money has come in fast for the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2700m) winner following the draw. Ladbrokes.com.au has shortened Seismos’ odds from $26 to $21.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Dandino will have to work a lot harder to win this year’s race after drawing the widest barrier (22), however he did come home second from barrier 16 in 2013. Craig Williams will partner the eight-year-old once again.

The Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi is also contesting the Cup, after finishing third last year.

The mare will start from barrier 13 with Jim Cassidy to ride, five places better than her 2013 start, which implies good things for the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) winner.

She is just one of four mares set to take on the boys this Saturday, with three guaranteed runs. Lucia Valentina is the best of the small pack, drawing barrier 12 (which will drop to an ideal 10 should the emergencies not start).

The four-year-old has been favourite for the 2014 Caulfield Cup ever since she won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 4, already shortening to $4.60 following the draw.

Kerrin McEvoy will ride Lucia Valentina once again, following their shock win at Flemington.

Japanese super star Admire Rakti got an ideal start after drawing barrier eight, which is a great advantage for the stayer who will ride with the top weight of 58kg, up to six kilos heavier than his rivals.

The other Japanese runner Bande also drew well in barrier 10, continuing to be only the second runner offering single figure odds ($8.50) after his brilliant five-length victory in the Listed Sapporo Nikkei (2600m).

Other horses who drew good barrier include the Jake Stephens-trained Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) winner Gris Caro (3), Turnbull Stakes runner-up Lidari (4), and Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) winner Moriarty (7).
