2014 Blue Sapphire Stakes Betting Update

A final field of just seven three-year-olds will race in the 2014 Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse this Wednesday, following the scratching of Chris Waller’s Delectation.

The $250,000 Listed Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) is the new headline act of the middle day of the Caulfield Cup.

With such a small field, there aren’t as many betting options for punters however this can work out in your favour as there is a better chance at backing a winner.

All but one of the entries are single figure hopefuls with Ladbrokes.com.au led by Eloping at $3.

The daughter of Choisir is in search of another lucrative win following her Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) success at Moonee Valley last month, which she added to a third placing in the Group 2 McEwan Stakes (1000m) three weeks prior.

Eloping had her first serious gallop on the course proper last Friday, which co-trainer Craig Widdison was more than impressed with.

“She’s terrific and her coat’s cleaned up,” he told racing.com.

“She’s pretty bombproof, she just does the right thing all the time and she’s really pleased us.”

Widdison is confident she can perform just as well as a three-year-old as she did as at two years of age. She will jump from barrier two with Stephen Baster to ride.

The other single figure hopefuls include Supido ($4.20), Husson Eagle ($5), and Tudor ($8).

The Michael Kent-trained Supido is making just his second competitive start in the 2014 Blue Sapphire Stakes but that hasn’t stopped money coming in for the colt. He is the market mover with Ladbrokes.com.au after shortening from $4.80 to $4.20 after finishing runner-up in the Pancare Foundation Plate (1000m) last month.

Husson Eagle has won or finished runner-up in four of his five career starts, including the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m), so he is another favourite with the punters.

Tudor will enjoy the inside run with Craig Williams to ride and is a last-start minor race winner at Moonee Valley.

The only runner offering double digit odds is Nicoscene ($16), who has a chance at causing an upset despite drawing the widest barrier. The colt has placed in all four of his career starts, including a wide draw from barrier 11.
