Chris Waller Set to Dominate 2014 Cox Plate with Four Runners

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller has yet to win one of Australian racing’s majors but that could soon change. Waller could see up to four of his runners in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25, following a number of the leading chances pulling out of the race.

Sacred Falls, Royal Descent, Foreteller, and He’s Your Man are all potential starters for the $3 million weight-for-age race, and Waller believes all four deserve the chance to run.

Sacred Falls missed out on a placing in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Saturday by just half a length but Waller is confident the horse will turn it around on Cox Plate Day.

He is the second-favourite in the Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with a price of $5.

“Sacred Falls has always been on the path towards the Cox Plate and horses like him who have had their preparation geared towards the race will be hard to beat,” Waller told TVN.

“We’ve had a race like the Mackinnon Stakes in mind for He’s Your Man but I’ll be taking him, along with all my chances, to Moonee Valley on the Tuesday before and if he says to us he is ready, we’ll have a crack at the Cox Plate.

“Owners are entitled to get the opportunity to run in a Cox Plate if they have a horse whose form warrants it.”

Foreteller is still on a 2014 Cox Plate path despite a disappointing Caulfield Stakes run, which saw the gelding finish eighth to Fawkner.

“If you look at his form last year, he ran quite poorly in the Underwood Stakes and then was able to bounce back and run second in the Caulfield Stakes and then fourth in the Cox Plate,” Waller said.

“Horses can produce a bad run for whatever reason and he was only beaten less than five lengths, he wasn’t disgraced and there isn’t anything wrong with him.”

Foreteller, along with Sacred Falls and He’s Your Man, has been allocated a top weight of 59kg for the Cox Plate while mare Royal Descent is on 57kg. None of the 41 nominations have received a penalty yet, though that may change following the weekend’s action.

Royal Descent is the highest rated mare in the Ladbrokes.com.au Cox Plate betting at $13 while Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) winner He’s Your Man and Foreteller are both paying $21.
