The Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) is one of 10 races taking place on Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday, October 18.

Headlining the 18-strong nomination field is the Natalie McCall-trained River Lad, who missed out on a placing in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) by just a shoulder his last time out.

The gelding proved successful during the winter season however, taking out back-to-back wins in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) and Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke (1400m).

Wez Hunter’s Smokin’ Joey is another leading nomination, following a win at the highest level after taking out Group 1 The Underwood (1200m) in May. He wasn’t able to reclaim his success one month later in the Straddie and also finished middle of the field his last time out in the Gilgai.

Godolphin is set to have two runners in the race following the nomination of both Limes and Generalife for trainer John O’Shea, who missed out on a minor placing his last time out in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m). However, the double Listed winner should be able to turn it around in the Moonga Stakes.

Ron Leemon’s Manawanui is in-form following a last-start win in the Group 3 Ritchie Handicap (1400m).

Peter Moody has nominated Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) winner Flamberge while Gai Waterhouse will be represented by Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) third Ryker.
