Nominations for the 2014 Caulfield Sprint were taken Monday morning, featuring a strong field of 22 sprint stars.
The Group 2 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint (1100m) is the supporting sprint race on Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday October 18, with many of the runners competing for a place in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8.
Headlining the nominations is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein.
The five-year-old mare has already enjoyed success in black type racing, taking out the Group 3 R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) and Group 1 Sangster Classic (1200m) in April.
However she followed this up with an end of the field finish in The Goodwood (1200m), unable to get a good run on the wet ground.
Two more Group One starts in the Doomben 10,000 and Tattersall’s Tiara also failed to materialise into anything worthwhile although she did manage to finish runner-up in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m).
This will be Driefontein’s first spring start, as she prepares for a tilt in the 2014 Darley Classic, after not being seen on the track since June.
2013 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) winner Bel Sprinter is another leading nominee for the Caulfield Sprint.
The Jason Warren-trained gelding hasn’t had a win since The Galaxy in March 2013, despite ten starts, and could only manage an eighth place finish in her defending run at this year’s Rosehill Gardens race.
The seven-year-old has faltered at the Group One level lately, failing to place in all four of her starts this year.
Warren is taking a step down in class to see if it helps Bel Sprinter return to his winning form. A three length barrier trial victory his last time out over 800m is hopefully a good sign.
Peter & Paul Snowden’s Miracles Of Life has enjoyed plenty of success since her debut win in December 2012.
The four-year-old mare has won five of her 12 career starts, and placed in a further three, including three black type races.
She heads into the Caulfield Sprint with some good form following two runner-up finishes in Listed races earlier this year followed by a Group 2 Sportingbet Stakes (1200m) win in May.
Miracles Of Life stumbled on her next start, finishing end of the field in the Goodwood. She hit the front around the corner but showed no interest and dropped out.
She has been given a rest since then but is back and ready to race again.
Trainer Peter Moody has a trio of sprinters in the nominations with Office Bearer, Spirits Dance, and Thermal Current all declaring for the 2014 Caulfield Sprint while Hawkes Racing will be represented by Mecir and Deep Field, who is unbeaten from his three minor starts.
