Spring Champion Stakes 2014 Odds Update

This afternoon at Royal Randwick the last Group 1 race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival takes place with the 2014 Spring Champion Stakes taking centre stage.

First Seal

There are nine three-year-olds engaged in this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) with no current scratchings from the set weights clash that is due to run as Randwick Race 6 at 4:10pm (local).

Easing out in the markets is the former odds-on favourite First Seal, John Thompson’s Flight Stakes winning filly out from $1.85 to $2.10 and now representing better value at Ladbrokes.com.au.

She won the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes two back over Winx and Blue Diamond winner Earthquake, and then last Saturday thrived over this track when stepped up to Group 1 company and the mile for the Flight Stakes.

She won that by a big three lengths, once again defeating Winx, but must now bring that brilliance to a 2000m race against the boys.

While she was previously the one the punters were coming for, the money is now on her 2014 Victoria Derby-bound rival Sweynesse who has firmed in from $3.50 to $2.90.

An undefeated son of Lonhro, the four time winning colt comes into the Group 1 on the back of two Group 3 wins in Sydney including the Gloaming Stakes over 1800m at Rosehill last time out that he won by a length.

There is just one other single figure hope in the Spring Champion odds with Panzer Division out from $6.50 to $7.50.

Drawn in the outside barrier nine, the Paul Messara-trained son of Redoute’s Choice beat home Shooting To Win in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) two back before a fifth in Group 1 company back at the track on September 20 in the George Main Stakes up over the mile.

Two other hopes sit under $20 in the markets then with last Saturday’s Dulcify Quality winner Hampton Court ($15 out to $16) and Valentia ($16 out to $17) coming off a Stan Fox Stakes third – both representing Gai Waterhouse.
