Tony McEvoy’s exciting stayer Big Memory is onto the Caulfield Cup 2014 next week after an impressive win in the $200,000 Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) in Melbourne on Caulfield Guineas Day.
The imported Duke Of Marmalade four-year-old will be back at the Caulfield track in seven days’ time making his Group 1 race debut in the $3 million Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) having beaten the ballot with the Herbert Power win.
Improving on a last start eighth when beaten only one and a half lengths by The Cleaner in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley, Big Memory was first past the post today for his first win since a three length effort at the Valley over 2500m in February.
Big Memory found a nice spot on the inside early settling around third with Bonfire on the rails leading throughout today’s Herbert Power with the likes of Signoff and Sangster also up near the front.
As they turned for home Bonfire left the fence and Big Memory darted up on the inside, but on the wrong leg.
After wobbling round the bend Big Memory ($6) straightened up and got the inside run up to the line to defeat the Darren Weir-trained market mover Signoff ($4.40) who tried hard down the outside while Nigel Blackiston’s Let’s Make Adeal ($15) was the best of the late runners storming up to run third.
In fourth was then Andreas Wholer’s German stayer Protectionist, the last start Group 2 Prix Kergorlay winner running an outstanding race coming from worse than midfield to narrowly miss out on the placings with the 59kg top weight on his back.
Protectionist will now head towards the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington.
Connections and jockey Glen Boss on second-past-the-post Signoff lodged a protest against Big Memory and his jockey Tommy Berry with a spot in the Caulfield Cup field riding on the outcome of the objection.
Big Memory came out and caused some minor interference but survived the protest and the win by a long neck held with Signoff, who got stuck into the wrong spot behind the tiring Masked Marvel, missing out on a Caulfield Cup start.
“He’s a bit of a box head,” Berry said of the winner post-race.
“It was a good win in the end.”
Before the Herbert Power Stakes result Big Memory was 34th in the Caulfield Cup ballot but he is now assured of a start in the field moving up to fourth on the order of entry.
He had the light weight today carrying only 53kg, down a kilo from the JRA Cup, and will also get in on the minimum going up from 50kg to 52kg when the Caulfield Cup weights are raised.
There will be a notable reshuffle in the Caulfield Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au now with Big Memory set to firm, trainer McEvoy confirming that so long as the horse pulled up well they would be there on Caulfield Cup Day.
“Very exciting,” McEvoy said.
“Thought we had him right for today and it was a really great effort.
“If he pulls up well he’ll run in the (Caulfield) Cup.
“He’s a really good stayer and should just get better and better so very excited.”
History shows however that while he’s made the field, his chances of completing the Herbert Power Stakes – Caulfield Cup double are statistically slim, the last to do so being Master O’Reilly (2007).
