Today Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse will host a bumper 10-race program for Caulfield Guineas Day 2014 featuring an incredible four Group 1 races plus four other support, Group status events.
Conditions are perfect for the latest Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival meeting today with sunny skies and a fast and firm Good (3) track that suits those that like to run on top of the ground.
Racing kicks off at Caulfield today at 1:00pm local time with the $120,000 Listed Inglis Debutant Stakes (1000m) where 12 two-year-olds will have their maiden run in front of a huge crowd.
The day’s marquee race of course is the $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) running as Race 9 at 5:40pm.
Originally the 2014 Caulfield Guineas field featured 14 three-year-olds but Friday’s withdrawal of the Johno Benner-trained New Zealander Our Vespa due to ongoing teeth issues leaves 13 hopefuls.
Caulfield Guineas betting markets are led by Rich Enuff ($2.20) after his fourth win on the trot this time in.
For the first time in history Caulfield Guineas Day will also be host to the fillies’ equivalent with the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) running one event before the showcase race.
The 2014 Thousand Guineas field attracted 11 three-year-old fillies but Anthony Cummings has scratched #10 High Above who was drawn out wide in barrier 10 with Mark Zahra booked for the ride.
The day’s opening Group 1 showdown meanwhile runs as Race 6 at 3:55pm where a dozen weight-for-age runners strut their stuff in the $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).
This year’s Caulfield Stakes is shaping up as a showdown between the top three fancies in the Ladbrokes.com.au markets for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley in a fortnight with the ones to beat being the Chris Waller-trained George Main Stakes winner Sacred Falls, last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner and the Peter Moody-trained flyer Dissident.
The last elite level on the program is then Race 7 at 4:30pm with a 15-horse field of milers and middle-distance stayers facing off in the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), the narrow favourite of which is last start Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Trust In A Gust ($5).
