The last race on the Caulfield Guineas Day program in Melbourne this weekend is the Sprint Series Final 2014 for the mares, tips on the event detailed below.
A dozen mares are fighting for bragging rights in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint Series Final (1200m) that is due to jump as Caulfield Race 10 at 6:15pm (local).
Heading the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $2.50 and firming is Shamal Wind, Robert Smerdon’s locally-trained daughter of Dubawi third-up for the season.
Group 1 performed in the autumn, five-year-old Shamal Wind comes off a third to Girl Guide in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) on September 20 and is looking to go two better here over the same track and distance.
Also under $10 to win is How Now Stakes winner Girl Guide ($3.60) jumping from barrier four with Craig Williams retaining the ride on the Churchill Downs five-year-old who shoots for her third win on the trot here.
So will the Sprint Series Final be down to two mares as the odds suggest?
Or is there value to be had further down the markets from the likes of consistent Good Journey four-year-old Griante ($11), Fare Well ($12) for Clarry Conners or Gig coming off a Group 1 run at the track ($13)?
#1 Girl Guide ($3.60)
Second pick in the markets is at an easing price and for us represents good value. Prepared by David Hayes & Tom Dabernig she’s only lightly raced with eight starts to date, six of which she’s won. Ultra-consistent and comes off back-to-back Melbourne wins including the How Now over this track and distance in good company where Saturday’s favourite Shamal Wind ran third.
#3 Brilliant Bisc ($14)
Nice price for the Peter Moody-trained Elvstroem mare in barrier one. Luke Nolen rides taking over from apprentice Regan Bayliss. Winner at Sandown at the start of September over 1000m and fourth last time out in an Adelaide black type over 1100m. Has had one previous Caulfield run finishing third and is improved since.
#4 Gig ($13)
Gig is down in class here after Shawn Mathrick’s Commands six-year-old ran 10th, beaten 5.5 lengths, in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago. Before that was fifth to Commanding Jewel in the Let’s Elope. She’s got an easier assignment here and races over 1200m for the first time since July. Sprint distance should suit and her record over the track and distance (4-0-3-0) is excellent. Loves Caulfield (9-0-5-1) and should be in the money.
