One of the top races for three-year-olds this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival runs at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday with a talented field facing off in the Caulfield Guineas 2014 – betting tips and selections for which are outlined below.
There are 14 in the mix for this year’s $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m), the set weights clash jumping at 5:40pm (local) as Caulfield Race 9.
Of the talented colts and geldings in the mix the best fancied in the Caulfield Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Rich Enuff at a firming $2.30.
The Ken Keys-trained, Cranbourne-based up-and-comer has won three of his four career starts to date and races in Group 1 company for the first time here.
The son of Written Tycoon is set to handle the class rise however after accounting for a similar field with an explosive two and a half length win in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) here on September 28.
The bookies are tipping him to extend his brilliance to a mile and the punters agree with money coming for Rich Enuff to become the third favourite in four years to win the race joining the former Peter Snowden-trained duo of Helmet (2011) and Long John (2013).
Also at single figures in Caulfield Guineas betting are the likes of Peter & Paul Snowden’s chance in 2014 Shooting To Win ($6.50), Prelude runner-up Looks Like The Cat ($7) who was also second to Rich Enuff the run before in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes and Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 JJ Atkins winner from last season Almalad ($8).
So are these single figure hopes the ones to lock into your Caulfield Guineas bets at Ladbrokes.com.au?
Or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the rails-drawn Zebulon ($19) or Michael Moroney’s last start Flemington winner Merion ($21)?
#3 Rich Enuff ($2.30)
He’s at a firming price and we believe Rich Enuff is deserving of his status and can salute for the punters continuing the trend of favourites with four winning in the past decade including two in the past three years. Took out the Prelude which has produced seven Caulfield Guineas winners in the past 11 years including four winners of the double in the past 12 years. He boasts the highest Win Rate (75%) and was emphatic last time out despite jumping from the outside barrier. Has speed and brilliant turn of foot so if handles the mile will be hard to run down.
#4 Shooting To Win ($6.50)
Peter Snowden has an ace recent record in this race saluting with two favourites in the past three years. Shooting To Win has ideal form too to hand him another having finished third in the Golden Rose two back before a tidy three length win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes last time out. That was over 1500m so 1600m should be a non-issue, but is his first Melbourne run so needs to handle the other way of racing. That said, he’s got the speed factor like the favourite and these two can turn it into an electrifying battle.
#2 Almalad ($8)
Only horse in the race with winning form over the mile, and he’s done it twice. The first was in Brisbane during the winter in the Group 1 JJ Atkins, a race fellow Guineas rival Looks Like the Cat ran third in, before his second at Moonee Valley in the Stutt Stakes last time out. That race has a nice record, second only to the Prelude, of producing Caulfield Guineas winners. Will be going up on the pace along with Rich Enuff tracking him and won’t be far off on the line.
