Protectionist Leads 2014 Herbert Power Stakes Final Field

A final field of 14 horses will battle for victory in the 2014 Herbert Power Stakes this Saturday at Caulfield Racecourse. Many of the entries are using the race as a lead-up to the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) the following week.

Seven of Monday’s nominations dropped out of the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m), the supporting stayers race on Guineas Day this weekend, leaving a less-than maximum final field of 14.

The race continues to be dominated by international talent, with 10 of the runners coming from overseas.

The Andreas Wohler-trained Protectionist continues to headline the field after drawing barrier two with Craig Williams set to ride.

The five-year-old has placed in all of his eight career starts, which includes four wins, three runner-ups, and one third placing.

Back-to-back wins on German soil puts the horse in great form as he readies himself for his first Australian run but he will ride with up to 6kg more weight than his rivals.

Tony McEvoy’s Big Memory will enjoy the rails run after drawing barrier one with Tommy Berry to ride. The Listed Torney Cup (2500m) winner has proven successful over the Herbert Power distance but will need to improve on his midfield finish last time out in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m).

The Marco Botti-trained Renew has drawn the widest gate with Chris Symons as jockey. The three-time winner got his 2014 spring racing campaign off to a rocky start after coming second-last in the Listed August Stakes (2300m) but turned it around for a minor placing in a handicap over 2820m last month.

Sangster, the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained gelding, is another leading contender for the race but will have to overcome a wider start from barrier 10. Partnered with Hugh Bowman, the New Zealand gelding was second in the JRA Cup his last time out.

Nigel Blackiston’s Let’s Make Adeal leads the home-grown contingent after drawing barrier five with Dwayne Dunn to ride.

The mare was a last-minute addition to the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) field last Saturday after scratchings but failed to make an impression, finishing end of the field 5.95 lengths behind Lucia Valentina.
