Bring Me The Maid Will Wear Blinkers in 2014 Thousand Guineas

The Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid is set to wear blinkers in the 2014 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday, in a last-ditch effort to improve the filly’s performance.

The daughter of Sebring disappointed her last time out, in which she was the favourite for the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), and Moody doesn’t want to leave anything in the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) to chance.

The filly worked well in blinkers during training at Caulfield on Tuesday morning, getting the better of Guineas rival Aimee in a 1200m gallop that saw her cover the last 400m in 24.05 seconds. This display all but convinced Moody to try blinkers on Saturday, even though the trainer doesn’t think they are necessary.

“I’m probably grasping at straws a little bit with the blinkers, I’m not convinced she needs them, but we’ll probably go down that path the way she worked,” Moody said to Sky Racing.

“She went dreadful in the Prelude to be honest.

“I’m prepared to forgive her that one, I can understand maybe the punters not wanting to, but I’m very pleased with her condition.”

However the punters haven’t totally gone off the filly. She’s the market mover at following yesterday’s 2014 Thousand Guineas barrier draw release, and is offering second-favourite odds of $5 along with Afleet Esprit, who beat her home by nearly four lengths in the Guineas Prelude.

Bring Me The Maid may have flopped in the Prelude, finishing in the bottom three, but it was a fast-finishing run that saw her only 3.85 lengths behind the winner, something part-owner Wylie Dalziel is keen to remember.

“For the first time in her career she didn’t let down, but she was still only beaten 3.85 lengths,” Dalziel said to Sky Racing.

“We’ve put it down to an off day and have just wiped the run.

“Peter was happy with her this morning, so we’ll push on and roll the dice.”

Bring Me The Maid hasn’t had a win since the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) in August, something her connections are hoping to fix come Saturday.
