2014 Caulfield Stakes Final Field – Sacred Falls Drawn Wide

A final field of twelve classy horses will line-up in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend, a race that is being billed as a mini-Cox Plate.

The top four horses in the early 2014 Cox Plate betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au are all set to clash in Saturday’s weight-for-age race.

Fawkner leads the early Cox Plate odds at $5.50 followed by Sacred Falls ($6.50), Dissident ($7.50), and Happy Trails ($8.50) – all four leading horses are among the final field released today for the 2014 Caulfield Stakes.

Sacred Falls, trained by Chris Waller, headlines the field but has drawn the widest barrier which means jockey Zac Purton will have to work that much harder to bring him across the post first.

The five-year-old has his share of Group One success, including a win from the Geo Main Stakes (1600m) his last time out.

The Robert Hickmott-trained Fawkner will jump from barrier four with Nicholas Hall to ride, Peter Moody’s Dissident will start from barrier eight under Ben Melham, and Paul Beshara’s Happy Trails will enjoy a midfield start with Damien Oliver.

The race is a significant distance test for Dissident as he bids to win beyond 1600m for the first time. Two Group One wins and another second from his three spring starts puts Dissident in great form ahead of the Caulfield Stakes but he must show he is capable over the 2000m distance to go on to the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25.

Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) runner-up Happy Trails failed to win back-to-back Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) races after a disappointing unplaced run last weekend.

The Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi will enjoy the inside run after drawing barrier one with Jim Cassidy to ride.

The five-year-old mare is in good form following a second place in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and a win her last time out in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m). She will also enjoy running with up to 2kg less than her male rivals.

Dual Group One winning Criterion will get a good start to the race after drawing barrier three with Hugh Bowman to ride while Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) winner his last time out Foreteller is also representing Chris Waller and will start from barrier 10.

Crackerjack King will make his first start since a third in the Underwood after being scratched from the Turnbull because of a wide barrier draw.
