Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Two flying three-year-olds are battling for top spot in the early Spring Champion Stakes 2014 odds ahead of Saturday’s Royal Randwick feature with Sweynesse narrow favourite over top filly First Seal.
Ninety-six gallopers were nominated for this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) last month with the capacity 14-starter, 4-emergency final field set for release on Wednesday morning.
There are currently five single figure hopes in the all-in Spring Champion Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au which are led by the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt Sweynesse ($2.10).
The up-and-comer is undefeated with four wins from as many starts to date including his last two in Group company.
His latest effort was a nice one length victory at Rosehill in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) on September 27, a race that has produced six of the past 11 Spring Champion Stakes winners.
All six of those also ran top two in the Gloaming, further boosting the form of Sweynesse who heads towards the $1.5 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on November 1.
Sweynesse pays $10 in Victoria Derby betting at Ladbrokes.com.au; three Victoria Derby winners having come via the Spring Champion Stakes since 2000 with Sangster (2011), Lion Tamer (2010) and Monaco Consul (2009).
Hot on Sweynesse’s heels in the Spring Champion Stakes odds meanwhile is First Seal at $2.50 to beat home the boys in the Group 1.
The John Thompson-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock entered Spring Champion Stakes calculations with her awesome mile effort at Randwick last Saturday winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) by a commanding three lengths.
Far too good for her fellow fillies that day, connections are likely to back her up in the Spring Champion over the extra distance this weekend with an eye on the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival on November 6.
The three other single figure hopes in the pre-field Spring Champion markets are then:
- Panzer Division ($4.60) – Paul Messara-trained Redoute’s Choice colt won the Group 3 Ming Dynasty two back before a fifth to Sacred Falls in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 20.
- Hampton Court ($8) – Another Redoute’s Choice colt, this one prepared by Gai Waterhouse, who comes off a black type win in the Listed Dulcify Quality over the Randwick mile last Saturday carrying 54kg with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira in the saddle. Will be up to 56.5kg under set weights on Saturday if accepted.
- Valentia ($8) – Fellow Waterhouse-trained hopeful, this Fastnet Rock colt was fifth in the Ming Dynasty two back and then third to Shooting To Win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill last time out on September 27.
Others high up the markets then include Allen Denham’s Gloaming Stakes third placegetter Pounamu ($11), the Chris Waller-trained Zabeel colt Preferment ($15), Gouldian ($17) for Godolphin and John O’Shea, and Waller’s Hussonet colt Hero I Am ($17).
See below for the Top 15 in the futures Spring Champion Stakes markets, these juicy futures price open for one more day only at Ladbrokes.com.au before Wednesday’s final acceptances.
