The 2014 Cox Plate acceptance field was whittled down a third time Tuesday, with 41 horses remaining in contention for the Moonee Valley Group One race on October 25.

Both the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m), running this Saturday, are lead-up races to the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), with a number of horses set to contest the Group One races at Caulfield Racecourse having been included in the Cox Plate third acceptances.

The last two Cox Plate winners have also come from these two races, with 2013 winner Shamus Award coming third in the Guineas and 2012 winner Ocean Park also winning the Stakes.

Trainer Peter Moody has come out and said he is treating the Caulfield Stakes as a Cox Plate test-run for Dissident, an early $7.50 bet with Ladbrokes.com.au.

“His only other run over the trip was as a three-year-old on heavy ground, so I’m treating this as his first start over the distance,” Moody told Racing Network on Tuesday.

“He needs to be running it right out for me to go to the Cox Plate,” Moody confirmed.

But the trainer is confident the horse has what it takes, as he is in perfect shape ahead of the race following a brilliant spring campaign that so far consists of two Group One wins from the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) before finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Charity Cup (1400m) his last time out.

“It’s hard to knock his form with two Group 1’s and beaten an inch in a third already this campaign,” Moody said.

Current favourites in the 2014 Cox Plate odds are Fawkner ($5.50) and Sacred Falls ($6.50), who will both be running the Caulfield Stakes this Saturday.

The Robert Hickmott-trained Fawkner finished runner-up his last time out in the Makybe Diva while Chris Waller’s Sacred Falls won the Group 1 Geo Main Stakes (1600m).

Many of last weekend’s winners from Epsom Handicap Day at Randwick and Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington earned their place in the Cox Plate 2014 third acceptances including Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) winner Junoob for Chris Waller and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) winner Lucia Valentina for Kris Lees, who surprised punters with a victory despite a foot injury just days before.

Hong Kong-trained star Dan Excel remains among the Cox Plate contenders, despite not being seen on a track since his Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) victory back in May.

He was missing from the Sir Rupert Clarke final field release but is set to make his Australian racing debut in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) this Saturday at Caulfield.

A huge range of racing talent makes up the rest of the nomination list, including Gai Waterhouse’s Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) winner Almalad, dual Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) winner Commanding Jewel, and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) favourite Go Indy Go.
