2014 Thoroughbred Club Stakes Nominations Released

Nominations for Saturday’s Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) were taken Monday, with just 10 three-year-old fillies declaring for the race.

The 2014 Thoroughbred Club Stakes is the supporting sprint race of Guineas Day at Caulfield Racecourse, for which nominations were extended until Tuesday in a bid to draw a bigger field size.

The John O’Shea-trained Godolphin filly Earthquake headlines the small field but will also carry the heaviest weight at 59kg, which is three kilos heavier than her last two starts.

The handicap is no surprise, considering the three-year-old has placed in all seven of her career starts, including four wins.

Her spring racing campaign has been good so far, though not up to her usual standards. While back-to-back third placings in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) are great performances in theory, they are her worst career results.

As her weight has increased, she’s found it harder to bring it home first.

Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison’s Eloping is another top nomination, heading to Caulfield with a Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) win under her belt.

Gerald Ryan’s Ygritte will enjoy a four kilo weight advantage over Earthquake as she searches for her second career win.

The filly enjoyed consecutive Group Two second placings early in the year but her first trip up in class in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 13 proved to be unsuccessful after finishing end of the field.

She returns to Group Three this weekend, and is tipped to be a top-three contender for the 2014 Thoroughbred.

Rounding out the nominations are Noel Doyle’s Group 3 Ken Russell Stakes (1200m) winner over the same distance Aimee and Hawkes Racing’s London Lolly, who won the Group 3 Breeders Stakes (1200m) back in March.
