2014 Herbert Power Stakes Nominations Released

Nominations for the 2014 Herbert Power Stakes were taken Monday morning, featuring a strong field of 21 potential stayers.

The Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) is the supporting stayers’ race on Guineas Day at Caulfield Racecourse Saturday October 11, with many of the entries competing for a place in the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) the following week.

The 21-strong nomination field is dominated by international talent, with just four home-grown horses featured.

Headlining the nominations is the Andreas Wohler-trained Protectionist from Germany.

The five-year-old bay horse has yet to not place in any of his eight career starts, which includes four wins, three seconds, and one third placing.

This will be Protectionist’s first run on Australian soil, which could hinder the horse. But back-to-back Group Two wins in Germany puts him in great form ahead of his debut.

Robert Hickmott’s Sea Moon is another leading entry, heading back to defend his Herbert Power title after taking out the race last year.

However the seven-year-old hasn’t had the best form of late. The horse was rested from competitive racing for seven months following a dead-last Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) finish back in March.

He returned to the field in last weekend’s Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) but could only manage a midfield fifth placing.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse has two nominations for the Herbert Power – Bonfire and Cafe Society. Bonfire will likely be missing from the field come Wednesday’s final acceptances, as the gelding is dually-nominated for the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) the same day.

Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) second his last time out, Sangster is featured in the race for Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young.

Let’s Make ADeal leads the four Australian nominated horses, after missing out on Caulfield Cup guaranteed placing from last weekend’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

The mare, who was a second-emergency for the race, stepped up to the field last-minute following scratchings but failed to make an impression, finishing bottom of the field.

This will be Nigel Blackiston’s last chance to earn a potential spot in the $3 million race.

Other leading nominees include Ciaron Maher’s gelding Mr O’Ceirin and Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) fourth Epingle.
