2014 Caulfield Stakes Nominations Led by Sacred Falls

Nominations for the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend were taken Monday morning, featuring a list of 17 three-year-olds and up.

Some of the season’s top stayers have declared for the 2014 Caulfield Stakes, in a bid to earn a berth for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Leading the nominations is trainer Chris Waller with two entries, Sacred Falls and Foreteller.

The five-year-old Sacred Falls just missed out on a placing in his first two starts of the 2014 spring racing season by a short head but turned it around last month to nab the Group 1 Geo Main Stakes (1600m) by one and a half lengths.

Foreteller also enters the 2014 Caulfield Stakes on good form after a third placing in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) before backing up to a win in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) last month. Second to Atlantic Jewel in last year’s race, Foreteller will be searching for one better this weekend.

Six of the last ten Caulfield Stakes winners have emerged from the Underwood while two ventured south from Sydney after the George Main, so this Chris Waller duo is one to watch.

However, leading the early betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is Fawkner ($4) and Dissident ($4.80).

Robert Hickmott’s Fawkner was a top performer in the 2013 spring racing carnival, winning the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) before an impressive sixth place in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

The gelding’s first start this year wasn’t as impressive, finishing end of the field in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), proving he is a much better stayer. A second in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) last month was a much better performance, and will do well in the step back up to 2000+ distance.

The Peter Moody-trained Dissident has had a great start to his spring racing campaign after back-to-back Group One wins in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Makybe Diva Stakes. A short half-head loss to Trust In A Gust in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) his last time out puts the horse in great form ahead of Saturday’s race.

Gai Waterhouse will be represented in the 2014 Caulfield Stakes by Bonfire from England. The gelding has only placed worse than third in three of his 12 career starts, but finds it hard to bring home the win.

The six-year-old has proven successful on the same distance, coming third his last time out in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m).
