2014 Caulfield Cup Third Acceptances Leave 41

Just forty-one stayers are still in the mix for the Caulfield Cup 2014 Saturday week following the release of third acceptances by Racing Victoria today.

At second declaration stage for this year’s $3 million Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) there were 78 horses in contention.

That figure has been cut nearly in half with third acceptances including seven international hopes.

Set to make their debut down under in the October 18 classic at Caulfield Racecourse are highly spuiked Japanese pair Admire Rakti and Bande.

Also among the 72 Melbourne Cup first declarations taken today, Admire Rakti and Bande are currently allocated 56kg and 54.5kg respectively for their maiden Australian run later this month.

Other headline international Caulfield Cup third acceptors include UK mare My Ambivalent and Dandino.

Roger Varian’s Authorzied six-year-old My Ambivalent is currently allocated 52.5kg and was last seen running fourth in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes (2000m) at The Curragh in Ireland back in June when carrying a much heftier 61.5kg.

Dandino meanwhile represents ace Newmarket trainer Marco Botti and also comes off a fourth over 2400m in the Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton Park.

Clear early favourite in the all-in Caulfield Cup odds at bookies around the country including Ladbrokes.com.au meanwhile is Lucia Valentina.

She is right on track for a Caulfield Cup win for the mares, the first for the females since Southern Speed (2011), after the Kris Lees-trained Savabeel four-year-old beat home a top field in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last weekend.

Finishing behind Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull Stakes trifecta was the Peter Moody-trained stable mates Lidari and Brambles who are both also among the Caulfield Cup third acceptances with 51.5kg.

Another big winner over the weekend was Sydney’s Chris Waller who prepared the quinella in both the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan at Randwick.

He also trained a notable winner in Melbourne too with his New Zealand expat and Auckland Cup winner Who Shot Thebarman taking out the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington.

That victory, the Yamanin Vital six-year-old’s second on the trot, also earned him a 1.5kg Caulfield Cup penalty taking him up to 53kg.

Waller has a total of seven remaining Caulfield Cup chances with his other runners being: Foreteller, Hawkspur, The Metropolitan winner Junoob and runner-up Opinion, Moriarty and French import He’s Your Man who took out the Epsom Handicap last weekend.

He’s Your Man was a notable non-omission from the Melbourne Cup today however and has been penalised 2.5kg in total for the Caulfield Cup taking him up to 52.5kg.

Other notable Caulfield Cup third declarations include the Donna Logan-trained Rising Romance and Dear Demi for Clarry Conners.

Ekraar mare Rising Romance won the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) in Sydney as a three-year-old back in April and has had three runs this time in.

The most recent of those was a second behind Moriarty in the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) last weekend, an effort she’s tipped to improve on when up over more distance.

Dear Demi meanwhile was third to Fawkner in last year’s Caulfield Cup beaten only 1.4 lengths and is well supported to feature in the finish again following a number of good runs this time in.

Her latest start was on September 26 at Moonee Valley when narrow winner of the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m).

While last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner is not defending his title, the galloper focusing on a $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) run this spring, trainer Robert Hickmott still has numbers looking to go back-to-back with the likes of Sea Moon and his 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.

The Caulfield Cup 2014 field of final acceptors is out on Tuesday October 14 and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
