2014 Angst Stakes Nominations Released

Nominations for the 2014 Angst Stakes were taken on Monday, with 17 mares declaring for the race.

The Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) is the supporting race at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Spring Champion Stakes Day, scheduled for this Saturday October 11, 2014.

The four-year-old and up mares race attracted a healthy field size of seventeen, led by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Gypsy Diamond.

The mare had a good beginning to her yearly campaign, taking out a win in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and runner-up in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m), both at Randwick over the same distance as the Angst.

However her 2014 spring racing season has so far got off to a rocky start after a midfield finish in the Group 3 Toy Show Stakes (1300m) and two bottom three finishes in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Geo Main Stakes (1600m) – all at Randwick.

The mare is back in a Group Three race over a mile, which should help her find success once more. However, she’ll have the biggest weight penalty along with Chintz after being allocated a weight of 57kg, up to three kilos heavier than her rivals.

The Joseph Pride-trained Chintz, one of three New Zealand mares in the field, is another leading entry. Second and third placings in two Group One meets over 1600m earlier this year makes her a top nominee, despite less than ideal recent form.

The five-year-old could only manage midfield finishes in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) and Golden Pendant (1400m) last month, but an increase in distance will only help Chintz.

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller is dually represented in the race by Forever Crazy and Saigon Tea.

Forever Crazy heads to Randwick with good form after winning a handicap race and finishing runner-up in another on her last two starts, while Saigon Tea has taken away two wins and three second placings from her last five minor race starts.

Peter Moody will be represented by triple handicap winner Spirit Of Heaven, while Kris LeesSoapy Star is also entered for the 2014 Angst Stakes.
