Odds-on Favourite Who Shot Thebarman Grabs 2014 Bart Cummings Victory

Jockey Glenn Boss has already taken out at double at Flemington Racecourse with a victory in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) partnering odds-on favourite Who Shot Thebarman, after finding victory home with Magicool in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m).

The gelding stayed at the back for most of the race with Master’s Degree and Waltzing to Win battling it out at the front for more than half of the race.

But with 500m to go, Who Shot Thebarman made his way up the pack with a late challenge from outside.

Displaying a great burst of strength, the pair came away from the pack with 100m to go and raced home easily to beat Marksmanship by three lengths with Anudjawun in third.

“I wanted to roll forward and I was either going to do a little bit too much work or it wasn’t going to work out for me, so there was a spot just back inside me so I reverse parked and just put him there,” Boss said directly following the race after getting back further than expected.

“Once I did that, that was good; he relaxed very well, he gave me a lovely ride and from the half-mile I just basically popped out three wide just to give him clean air, see where I could go whenever I wanted to.

“He looked like he was in trouble at the 400m and at the 300m but we got to the furlong and he got into his gear, he gets strong through the line.”

Stable representative for Chris WallerJustine Hales was equally pleased with the performance.

“He put up really well. He’s got a great set of lungs and can really stay,” she said straight after the win.

“He appreciates the long straight here.

“He takes a little time to wind up but he’s got such a long stride and once he gets going it’s very easy for him.”

Hales also announced Who Shot Thebarman will most likely take the path of Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) to the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) for the remainder of his spring campaign.

“I think he’s got a bit more weight in the Melbourne Cup than he does in the Caulfield Cup so hopefully we can bump the weight off a bit and get there,” she added.
