Magicool Scores Narrow 2014 UCI Stakes Win

Mark Kavanagh’s Magicool ($10) took out the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington Racecourse Saturday afternoon, beating Atmosphere and War Point across the line.

The Mark Price pair, Hawking ($13) and War Point($6), took the lead early but it was Hawking that took up the running in the early stages, taking the lead at 1400m ahead of Magicool.

Hawking was a length in front at 1000m with Easting Cape in second, with War Point and Magicool a length back, while the rest of the field were a further two lengths back including the market favourite Kaizaen ($4.20).

Magicool pulled right around and took the lead from Atmosphere and War Point with 200m to go, with no other rivals being able to keep up with the top three.

Both were trying hard to take the lead but Magicool kept responding with a ¾  lead with 100m to go.

Kavanagh’s gelding held on and won the race by just half a length.

Jockey Glen Boss was quick to praise the gelding following the victory, despite his early mistakes.

“I basically stuffed that up a lot – I got there way too soon, he was going a bit easy for me and the leader started to drop off and he got there a mile too far from home,” Boss said directly after the race.

“I’ve had a lot of confidence in this horse ever since I first rode him, he’s a beautifully bred colt and everything he does on track says he wants to stay.

“He’s going the right direction to say he’ll be here on Derby Day.”

Kavanagh was equally as impressed with Magicool’s run, and was quick to confirm the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) as his lead-up to the Victoria Derby.

“These Fastnet Rocks, when you cross them over to Galileo mares and they’re very, very stout you can get a very good turn of foot on a stayer,” Kavanagh said after the race.

“He rode him confident didn’t he, it was really good. He stargazed a bit at the end – this is his first race in town, we’ve only had him in the country so there’s a fair bit of upside there.”
