Fontein Ruby Wins 2014 Edward Manifold Stakes

Market moving Maastricht, who was the punters pick to take out the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) was beaten to the post by Fontein Ruby, the filly bought for just $50,000.

Fontein Ruby won the 2014 Edward Manifold Stakes for Robert Smerdon.

Hawkes Racing’s Maastricht was first to jump in the Flemington race, but Pittsbugh Flyer quickly took the lead with Royal Ocean and Fontein Ruby in third.

The Robert Smerdon-trained Fontein Ruby took the lead after getting trapped in the field with a neat little turn of foot and from there it was a contest between Fontein Ruby, Maastricht, and Crafty with the former managing to just hold on across the line.

Smerdon ultimately got the one-three of the race, as Crafty came in third.

Jockey Mark Zahra had nothing but praise for the filly’s run.

Speaking directly after the race, Zahra said: “she can get her head up and get on the chewy a bit so I just let her ride the front.

“She was pretty good once she was there, and it was easy stuff.”

Zahra believes she can get further going forward from the 1600m, possibly towards the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) in a fortnight, for which she is nominated.

“She’s relaxing better each run and you wouldn’t put it beyond [to go further],” the jockey said.

Maastricht especially ran like he was looking for the 2000m, so Team Hawkes will need to discuss her next spring campaign start which includes nominations for the bigger distances Caulfield Classic and Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).
