Coolmore Stud Stakes Next for Roman Consul Winner Brazen Beau

Brazilian-born jockey Joao Moreira made it an early double on Epsom Handicap Day guiding the Chris Waller-trained Coolmore Stud Stakes hope Brazen Beau to victory in the 2014 Roman Consul Stakes.

The start before Moreira, over from Hong Kong for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap ride on Waller’s last start Kingston Town Stakes winner He’s Your Man, won the Dulcify Quality on Hampton Court.

Then in the fourth on the Randwick line-up he was first over the line again this time thanks to a patient and well-timed ride aboard I Am Invincible colt Brazen Beau for his second-up run of the season.

“It’s good to get the monkey off the back with an early winner on a big day,” Waller said after the Roman Consul Stakes.

First-up the Group 1 JJ Atkins runner-up behind Cox Plate fancy Almalad from the winter ran fifth to Caulfield Guineas-bound Rich Enuff in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m).

He pulled up lame post-race however, the Group 2 Champagne Classic winner in Brisbane back in May having his first look down the Flemington straight.

Waller is now likely to return to the 1200m at Victoria’s premier track for a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) after Brazen Beau ($3.40) pulled clear to defeat Nostradamus ($5) and the fellow Waller-trained Delecation ($15) in the Roman Consul Stakes today.

“Just little things went wrong last time,” Waller explained.

“It was his first time up the straight first-up off a winter spell.

“He wasn’t disgraced and we saw the real horse turn up today.”

Brazen Beau was settled into a lovely trailing position third in the early stages while Time For War was racing too fresh up front in the lead.

On the home turn he went to the outside and strode up to take the lead with 100m to go before kicking away in a commanding finish showing off his brilliant turn of foot in an electric performance.

“Not many horses travel so nicely when I put him under pressure on the straight he just gave me everything he’s got,” Moreira said post-win.

“He’s a lovely horse and Chris knows his horses better than anyone else.”

Race favourite was last start Golden Rose winner Hallowed Crown ($2.80), the James & Bart Cummings-trained galloper luckless today back down from 1400m to 1200m.

Hallowed Crown’s jockey Hugh Bowman got him stuck on the inside in an unfavourable position where he was unable to improve from getting shuffled back, the horse proving more of a 1400m – 1600m type.

Today’s Roman Consul Stakes result saw Waller go back-to-back in the three-year-olds’ showdown following the win from Zoustar 12 months ago.

Also a winner of last year’s Golden Rose, Zoustar backed up from the Roman Consul last spring and took out the Coolmore – the same double Waller is now keen to attempt with Brazen Beau.

“Good colts win this race, it’s a stallion building race,” he said.

“Most likely (we’ll back up in the Coolmore Stud Stakes).

“That was always the plan.

“He’s had the experience of running down the straight and he goes there in winning form.”
