2014 Gimcrack Stakes Quinella for Godolphin

Godolphin have kicked off Super Saturday on a high with a quinella for the stable and trainer John O’Shea in the first on Epsom Handicap Day, Calaverite defeating stablemate Igraine in the Gimcrack Stakes 2014.

A race that has served as a springboard for a number of genuine turf champions over the years, this year saw the $100,000 Listed Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) launch the careers of eight juvenile fillies.

A big easer on track and at Ladbrokes.com.au out from $14 to $21 in Gimcrack Stakes betting, the nicely bred Calaverite proved better than her price with a speedy performance.

Living up to her pedigree today’s Gimcrack Stakes winner is a daughter of Lonhro out of Karrakatta Plate winner in WA Gold Rocks.

On the back of a second in a trial on the Kensington track from September 22, former ace apprentice Sam Clipperton rode Calaverite ($21) to victory today with the duo just holding off the fellow O’Shea-trained market drifter Igraine ($16), who settled into third, by half a length who was ridden by Glyn Schofield.

In a close third still under a length off the winner was the market mover Speak Fondly ($3.70), run down in the closing stages after being four deep coming into the straight to hit the lead down the outside with 300m left to travel, for Gai Waterhouse.

Waterhouse had four in the race including Rosie Quadrille who set the pace up front after the jump and the beaten $3.60 favourite Prevail who was well back and struggling to come into the race eventually crossing fourth.

“This filly gave me a lovely feel,” Clipperton said of Calaverite post-race on TVN.

“Very professional. She’s a bit of a natural racehorse and she really impressed me there.”

There is sure to be another nice race or two later in the spring for Calaverite after today’s Gimcrack Stakes result with the obvious target being next year’s Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival in April 2015.
