John Thompson has uncovered a very special filly in First Seal who won her maiden Group 1 today with an explosive effort in the Flight Stakes 2014 at Randwick Racecourse.
Having now won three of her five starts there are a host of nice options for this daughter of Fastnet Rock, a lovely looking three-year-old who is living up to her potential.
Last time out First Seal won the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) in an upset over the Chris Waller-trained favourite Winx.
Today though she jumped the punters’ pick in the Ladbrokes.com.au’s markets for the $400,000 Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) with Blake Shinn staying on and taking her into a nice spot fourth and one out.
Facing off against the Tea Rose runner-up Winx again, First Seal was far too good for her and the rest of the field pulling away over the closing stages to win by around three lengths.
“You get really good looking horses and they never live up to what they show or what they look,” Shinn said post-win.
“But she’s got great presence about her and she’s got an unbelievable motor and she puts it on for the crowd.
“Very special to be able to win a Group 1 race for John with this top line filly.
“It means a lot obviously I’ve faced a few tough battles but I’ve had a lot of support to get back to wear I am today.”
Winx was a lot further back in the run today sitting off the pace set by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal before crossing behind the field and saving ground up on the rail.
Shinn had First Seal poised behind the leaders coming into the home turn before she took off at the 200m mark in an electrifying finish that stamped her as the dominant three-year-old filly of the season.
“She’s shown us from day one,” Thompson said.
“She’s been very good. She’s something special.
“Definitely the best filly I’ve had.”
Completing the same double Guelph achieved 12 months earlier, market mover First Seal ($2.35) had a nice margin to spare over Winx ($2.70) who raced a little flat today and didn’t have the late burst to match her now two time conqueror.
In third was then the third pick in the markets, the previously undefeated Thinking Of You ($6), who missed the start, for Peter Moody who is likely to back her up in Melbourne next weekend at Caulfield in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).
The 2014 Thousand Guineas on Caulfield Guineas Day is also an option for today’s Flight Stakes winner as it was for Guelph who backed up to win again.
The ease of her win today however, and the fact Shinn didn’t have to ask her to go, means First Seal is sure to get more distance.
Thompson then could be more tempted to take her into the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) run back at the Randwick track next Saturday.
From there the options are wide open and could include a look at the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 6 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“She’s a very good filly and there’s some good wins in store,” Thompson said.
“I’ll let the horse tell me (where to next).
“I’m not sure. She’s entered next week for the Spring Champion so I might think of that.”
