The $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) due to run as Race 7 at 4:20pm, will feature a maximum field of 16 horses plus one emergency after the scratching of both Crackerjack King and Sertorius earlier today.

Five of the 17 entries are offering single figure Turnbull Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Happy Trails, Puissance De Lune, and Lucia Valentina all contesting favouritism at $6.

Paul Beshara’s Happy Trails is the defending Turnbull champ and will enjoy a rails run after drawing the lucrative first barrier. Second on his last start in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 20, all eyes are on the seven-year-old to see if he can go two for two.

The Darren Weir-trained Puissance De Lune will start from barrier two with Brad Rawiller to ride. Back to back third placings on his last two starts, both Group Ones, puts the horse in solid form ahead of the Turnbull.

Kris Lees’ Lucia Valentina is the third favourite for the 2014 Turnbull Stakes despite finishing midfield her last time out. The four-year-old began the spring racing season with a win in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and followed it up with a fast finishing sixth in the Group 1 Geo Main Stakes (1600m).

The other two single figure hopefuls in the Turnbull odds are Roger JamesSilent Achiever, who has been lengthened from $5.50 to $7, and Stipulate ($9.50).

With so many leading contenders in the mix, it may be hard for you to pick a winner. Check out our top three picks below for the Saturday feature race at Flemington for some clarity.

#2 Happy Trails ($6)

Paul Beshara’s defending champ returns for back-to-backs Turnbull wins and will be one of the main players here. The gelding is in good form after coming second his last time out in the Group 1 Underwood, which is the key lead-up race to the Turnbull. A good Flemington track record will work well in Happy Trails favour.

#13 Gris Caro ($19)

The Jake Stephens-trained Gris Caro has been given fairly long odds despite a win on his last start over the same distance as the Turnbull in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m), which can only be a good thing for backers of this six-year-old. Gris Caro will enjoy a start from barrier six under jockey Ben Melham.

#16 Lucia Valentina ($6)

Kris Lees’ Lucia Valentina has seen her price lengthen slightly over the past 24 hours but is still getting a lot of money. The mare will jump from barrier five which is last year’s winning barrier. Made a stunning return in the Tramway Stakes last month before getting too far back in the George Main Stakes. Looks ready for the 2000m now and is a worthy competitor.
