There are 16 stayers in the field for Saturday’s 2014 The Metropolitan, running as Race 9 at 5:20pm.

Just three of the 16 hopefuls are single figure bets in the latest Metropolitan odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Spillway leading the market at $4.60.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig horse will start from the middle of the field with James McDonald to ride and has enjoyed four career wins to date, including the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) back in April.

The five-year-old hasn’t had the best start to his 2014 spring racing campaign however after missing out on a placing in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and finishing midfield in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) his last time out.

It’s best to steer clear of the favourites in the Metrop as in the past 10 years only two favourites have won and five failed to place.

Also available at single figures in The Metropolitan betting is Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) winner Junoob ($5) for Chris Waller and Hill Stakes fourth La Amistad ($7.50) starting from barrier six.

Will the three single figure hopes make it home? Or will one of the many runners offering double digit odds cause an upset?

#1 Junoob ($5)

One of only three last start winners on the field, Junoob has been a market mover over the last couple of days, with the gelding’s price shortening from $7 to $5. The best of trainer Chris Waller’s five entries will start from the ideal third gate under Blake Shinn. The gelding has had rocky form of late, but a Hill Stakes win his last time out puts him on the right track. The step up in trip shouldn’t pose any problems and he loves the Randwick track.

#13 Disclaimer ($14)

The Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) winner on her last start. Peter & Paul Snowden’s mare will have to overcome a wide run under Christian Reith after drawing barrier 15 but is down in the weights at 55kg, up to three kilos lighter than the top runners, and should be a contender at the finish line. Also she can handle dry ground conditions, unlike many of the Europeans.

#15 Iggi Pop ($19)

John Sargent’s six-year-old will enjoy the rails run after drawing barrier one with Jim Byrne to ride which puts him in a great position to bring it home. The gelding is also coming off a Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality Handicap (2400m) second last Saturday, which proves he is successful at the distance.
